Sonnet 98: From you have I been absent in the spring

From you have I been absent in the spring,

When proud-pied April, dressed in all his trim,

Hath put a spirit of youth in everything,

That heavy Saturn laughed and leaped with him.

Yet nor the lays of birds, nor the sweet smell

Of different flowers in odour and in hue,

Could make me any summer’s story tell,

Or from their proud lap pluck them where they grew:

Nor did I wonder at the lily’s white,

    Nor praise the deep vermilion in the rose;

They were but sweet, but figures of delight

Drawn after you, – you pattern of all those.

Yet seem’d it winter still, and, you away,

As with your shadow I with these did play.

    More Than Enough

The first lily of June opens its red mouth.

All over the sand road where we walk

    multiflora rose climbs trees cascading

white or pink blossoms, simple, intense

the scene drifting like colored mist.

The arrowhead is spreading its creamy

clumps of flower and the blackberries

are blooming in the thickets. Season of

joy for the bee. The green will never

again be so green, so purely and lushly

new, grass lifting its wheaty seedheads

into the wind. Rich fresh wine

of June, we stagger into you smeared

with pollen, overcome as the turtle

laying her eggs in roadside sand.

    Christina Rossetti, ‘Spring‘.

There is no time like Spring,

    When life’s alive in everything,

    Before new nestlings sing,

Before cleft swallows speed their journey back

    Along the trackless track –

    God guides their wing,

He spreads their table that they nothing lack, –

Before the daisy grows a common flower

    Before the sun has power

To scorch the world up in his noontide hour…

Poem - when faces called flowers float out of the ground... by e e cummings

when faces called flowers float out of the ground

and breathing is wishing and wishing is having –

but keeping is downward and doubting and never

    – it’s april(yes, april; my darling) it’s spring!

yes the pretty birds frolic as spry as can fly

yes the little fish gambol as glad as can be

(yes the mountains are dancing together)

when every leaf opens without any sound

and wishing is having and having is giving –

but keeping is doting and nothing and nonsense

    – alive: we’re alive, dear: it’s (kiss me now) spring!

now the pretty birds hover so she and so he

now the little fish quiver so you and so i

(now the mountains are dancing, the mountains)

when more than was lost has been found has been found

and having is giving and giving is living –

but keeping is darkness and winter and cringing

    – it’s spring (all our night becomes day) o, it’s spring!

all the pretty birds dive to the heart of the sky

all the little fish climb through the mind of the sea

(all the mountains are dancing; are dancing)

    Fyodor Tyutchev 1870

    "To K. B."

You’re here again – and of a sudden

A warmth long gone floods my dead heart,

And all I thought forgot, unbidden

Returns, of me becomes a part.

Just as spring’s breath may soft come stealing

Upon the air on late fall’s day

And rouse in us a vanished feeling

Of life, of something young and gay –

So of past years do I recover

The richness, and on your sweet face

With all the ardour of a lover

    In reawakened rapture gaze.

Too long apart, drawn are we nearer

Once more — you’re here, ’tis not a dream!

Sounds, ne’er within me stilled, the clearer

At sight of you and louder seem.

Remembrance? – No! The rustling pages

Of life turn fast – life’s full again.

    Your loveliness stays ever changeless,

My love for you unchanged remains.

    bl 2020

the sunny day has become longer,

sparkles like opal the dew on the undergrowth!

and the chirping of birds will awaken in the morning,

and people often tell only the truth.

the stream murmurs, the snow thaws.

and brighter, more cheerful, hotter a person thinks.

    and who influenced the changes?

the spring of creation - these events!

the poem is called "The Evolution of Winter", my own creation. the original language may not be familiar to you, therefore it is presented in the translation

    события сии - весны творенья!

    A Prayer in Spring

    By Robert Frost - 1874-1963

    Oh, give us pleasure in the flowers to-day;

And give us not to think so far away

As the uncertain harvest; keep us here

All simply in the springing of the year.

Oh, give us pleasure in the orchard white,

    Like nothing else by day, like ghosts by night;

And make us happy in the happy bees,

The swarm dilating round the perfect trees.

And make us happy in the darting bird

That suddenly above the bees is heard,

The meteor that thrusts in with needle bill,

And off a blossom in mid air stands still.

For this is love and nothing else is love,

The which it is reserved for God above

To sanctify to what far ends He will,

But which it only needs that we fulfil.

    Spring by Gerard Manley Hopkins

    By Gerard Manley Hopkins
Nothing is so beautiful as Spring –

    When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush;

Thrush’s eggs look little low heavens, and thrush

Through the echoing timber does so rinse and wring

    The ear, it strikes like lightnings to hear him sing;

The glassy peartree leaves and blooms, they brush

The descending blue; that blue is all in a rush

With richness; the racing lambs too have fair their fling.

What is all this juice and all this joy?

A strain of the earth’s sweet being in the beginning

In Eden garden. – Have, get, before it cloy,

Before it cloud, Christ, lord, and sour with sinning,

Innocent mind and Mayday in girl and boy,

Most, O maid’s child, thy choice and worthy the winning.

    I Watched a Blackbird

    By Thomas Hardy

I watched a blackbird on a budding sycamore

    One Easter Day, when sap was stirring twigs to the core;

I saw his tongue, and crocus-coloured bill

    Parting and closing as he turned his trill;

Then he flew down, seized on a stem of hay,

And upped to where his building scheme was under way,

As if so sure a nest was never shaped on spray.

    Spring The Season Of Joy

    by: Rahat Sandhu

The spring is here and the sun is bright,
Everyone is playful they are not having anyone's fright.
I could see the little birds swaying their wings,
I could hear the pretty flowers sing.
The green leaves that are dancing in the air,
Are fearless from everyone present here.
Tip! tip! tip! the water falls,
Sweep! sweep! sweep! the caterpillar crawls.
And when the playful squirrels run,
They seem that they are having so much fun.
As the small kids are swinging high,
Their rosy pink cheeks get shy.
    Jumping, jumping come the rabbits,
I really praise their lovely habits.
As they play with their long ears,
Everyone forgets their cries and tears.
But lets wait for the butterflies,
Who keep on flying in the endless skies.
But now mam taps on the door,
And it's the time to go indoor.
I'm always eager for the spring to come,
Because it brings along so much fun.

    Spring, spring, spring. ...

    By: Victor Marques

Wake up and running to get yourself in paradise,

Looking for something a little bit wise,

Waiting for mothers with children in their arms,

    Flowers colours are great signs.

The days are bigger with more and significant light,

Nature reserves all the beauties in silver green,

Birds sing along day and night,

Wolfs , bears and cuckoos appear on the scene.

Everything is going well with God's grace,

Silence in every thought, you love nature!

Dreams seem to be able to offer fantastic time,

Let's see sunshine, let's drink a glass of wine.

Just look around and tell me what Spring can you see?

Think about the stars shinning for you and me.

Spring is born again in the same place with freedom and

Go around in the fields and spring is everywhere. ..

    Spring Quiet by Christina Rossetti

    Gone were but the Winter,

    Come were but the Spring,

I would go to a covert

    Where the birds sing;

    Where in the whitethorn

    Singeth a thrush,

    And a robin sings

    In the holly-bush.

    Full of fresh scents

    Are the budding boughs

    Arching high over

    A cool green house:

    Full of sweet scents,

    And whispering air

    Which sayeth softly:

    "We spread no snare;

    "Here dwell in safety,

    Here dwell alone,

    With a clear stream

    And a mossy stone.

    "Here the sun shineth

    Most shadily;

    Here is heard an echo

    Of the far sea,

    Though far off it be."

    A primavera

Agora que o inverno acabou, a terra perdeu

Suas vestes brancas como a neve, e agora não mais a geada

Rebenta na grama ou lança um creme gelado

    Sobre o lago de prata ou riacho de cristal;

Mas o sol quente derrete a terra entorpecida,

E torna-o terno; dá um nascimento sagrado

Para a andorinha morta; acorda em árvore oca

    O cuco sonolento e a abelha humilde.

Agora faça um coro de menestréis cantando trazer

Em triunfo para o mundo, a jovem primavera.

Os vales, colinas e bosques em uma rica variedade

Bem-vindo a vinda do tão esperado maio.

    Agora todas as coisas sorriem, só o meu amor floresce;

In open fields; and love no more is made

By the fireside, but in the cooler shade

Amyntas now doth with his Chloris sleep

Under a sycamore, and all things keep

Time with the season; only she doth carry

June in her eyes, in her heart January.

    Spring, Karla Kuskin

    I’m shouting

    I’m singing

    I’m swinging through trees

    I’m winging sky-high

    With the buzzing black bees.

    I’m the sun

    I’m the moon

I’m the dew on the rose.

    I’m a rabbit

    Whose habit

    Is twitching his nose.

    I’m lively

    I’m lovely

    I’m kicking my heels.

    I’m crying “Come dance”

    to the freshwater eels.

    I’m racing through meadows

    Without any coat

    I’m a gamboling lamb

    I’m a light leaping goat

    I’m a bud

    I’m a bloom

I’m a dove on the wing.

    I’m running on rooftops

    And welcoming spring!

    Love Spring...

    por: Pablo Neruda

I only want five things ...

    First is endless love

The second is to see the autumn

The third is the severe winter

    Fourth the summer

The fifth thing is your eyes I do not want to sleep without your eyes.

I do not want to be without you looking at me.

I give up spring for you to continue looking at me.

Emily Dickinson, ‘A Light Exists in Spring‘.

    A Light exists in Spring

    Not present on the Year

    At any other period –

    When March is scarcely here

    A Color stands abroad

    On Solitary Fields

    That Science cannot overtake

    But Human Nature feels…

Written in around 1864 but not published until 1896 (as with many of Dickinson’s poems), ‘A Light Exists in Spring’ beautifully captures the way that spring slowly appears in our consciousness, like a light in the distance. The final stanza of Dickinson’s poem also seems to acknowledge what we now call ‘SAD’ or Seasonal Affective Disorder, with the passing of spring affecting our contentedness. Today I think I'm late to bloom

And in the color spring function,

I fertilized and watered that love,

    Accelerating the button to open.

    Contaminated stems - banish!

Isolation without damage to the flower,

That in the freshness of the singing wind,

Expose the petal to the sun without feeling.

    Wise roots of winter life,

Freer clone with each new pruning,

    Regenerates me in immaculate sap.

With open branches, like a hug,

Spreading joy and pollen in the breeze,

I am more flowery in the verses I write.

When the cold, harsh winter has given its last breath,

When the sky above shows life instead of death,

When the claws reaching to the frozen sky become decorated with leaves,

When the animals -long in hiding- scurry from trees,

    We know winter has ended.

When the frost on grass is replaced with sweet dew,

When the fields become dotted with flowers, reminding me of you,

When the lonely silence becomes filled with melodies,

When you feel warm air, erasing bad memories

    We know winter has ended.

When the hard, bare ground becomes painted with green,

When the frost-bitten air becomes fresh and clean,

When the coats and boots are all stored away,

When the playgrounds become occupied again with child's play,

    We know winter has ended.

When you hear the pleasant sound of children's laughter,

When the air is filled with joy- long sought after,

When the world is filled with sunlight, brighter and longer,

When the song of Mother Nature becomes stronger,

    Spring has begun.

  • The Daffodils
    William Wordsworth
    , 1770 – 1850

I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o’er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

    A host, of golden daffodils;

Beside the lake, beneath the trees,

Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine

And twinkle on the Milky Way,

    They stretched in never-ending line

Along the margin of a bay:

Ten thousand saw I at a glance,

Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they

Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:

A Poet could not but be gay,

    In such a jocund company:

    I gazed—and gazed—but little thought

What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye

    Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

    And dances with the daffodils.
